Robert Malik Lawrence Bio

Robert Malik Lawrence LAc. was introduced to natural healing in the late 1960‘s by a family friend who introduced him to wild foods and medicinal herbs. This lead Malik to a life long interest in the healing effects of herbs, herbal formulas, exercise and nutrition. This interest in natural healing, wellness and fitness attracted Malik to the martial arts, which he has been studying since his early teens. In 1989 Malik met tai chi chuan Master Wei Lun Huang and began a dedicated study of tai chi and qi gong. After he began teaching tai chi and qi gong in 1990, Malik realized that it would benefit his students, as well as himself, if he were to study the body more formally, so he enrolled in massage school.

After completing a 750 hour nationally accredited Massage Therapy program, Malik went into practice as a Licensed Massage Therapist. Malik also began teaching at Florida School of Massage, where he taught until going to China to study Acupuncture. Currently Malik teaches Oriental Bodywork at the Body Therapy Institute in Silk Hope NC.

Malik found that the integration of martial arts and massage training deepened his understanding, and abilities in each discipline. As his study of tai chi and qi gong deepened, and the work with his students and clients progressed, Malik was continually drawn to the therapeutic and healing actions of these practices. This led him to study Qi Healing and Qi Gong Therapy with Master Tzu Kuo Shih. Qi Healing and Qi Gong Therapy use Chinese Medical theory combined with meditation, movement, and visualization, to create individualized healing practices. From Master Shih, Malik learned how to treat a wide variety of medical conditions with Master Shih’s unique methods of Qi Gong Therapy and Qi Healing.

After many years of teaching tai chi and qi gong, and working as a massage therapist, at age 39 Malik enrolled in Nan Jing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine to study Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. During his studies in China, Malik interned at the university’s affiliated hospitals, were he spent time treating patients in the respiratory and pediatric departments, as well as general family medicine. Nan Jing University of TCM is one of four universities in China that has World Health Organization (WHO) accreditation for its foreign student programs.

In 2003, Malik moved to North Carolina, and settled in Chapel Hill, where he met his wife, Tori Ralston. In 2007, after the birth of their son Addison, Malik opened Carrboro Acupuncture Clinic in a mill house on High St. in Carrboro.
